fairmont resort

Located at the edge of Port Douglas in Northern Queensland, the Fairmont Resort is a new, luxury 5+ star hotel comprising 253 rooms, conference facilities, restaurants cafes and bars. It is the newest development in Port Douglas that will contribute to the town’s thriving tourist industry and the first Fairmont Resort that the Accor Group is creating in Australia.

Chiodo Corporation along with Pure Project, who are project managers for the development, appointed GTA in July 2020 to provide transport advice for the future resort and ensure its long-term operational capacity. As part of this assignment, GTA provided specialist transport engineering services to develop a solution that considered resort logistics alongside factors that would provide the best guest and visitor experience as well as embrace Accor’s ‘Planet 21’ sustainability initiative.

GTA’s strategy assessed travel modes to Port Douglas and the resort, different opportunities to visit nearby sites and attractions, as well as accommodate tours and private cars coming to and from the hotel. The objective was to deliver transport outcomes that focused as much on optimising functionality as creating a seamless journey for guests and visitors.

To achieve this, GTA undertook a site visit to understand the context and transport network, assessing ways to integrate with the existing infrastructure without disturbing current traffic and operations. Similarly, we provided advice around the car parking supply required to meet the needs of staff, guests and visitors, as well as prepared a report to support the Development Application for the Council and government bodies.

GTA also undertook retrospective research around visitor numbers and travel patterns to ensure the transport solution balanced peak and off-peak transport requirements. Similarly, our team engaged closely with Chiodo Corporation and Pure Project, as well as Council and Transport and Main Roads, to provide an outcome that not only delivered on statutory requirements but the developer’s vision for the new resort.

The Development Application is currently with Council for approval and the resort is due to begin construction in 2021.
