Mid-Murray Council Strategic Bicycle Plan

GTA Consultants and 180 Sports and Leisure Solutions were engaged by Mid Murray Council to prepare a Local Area Strategic Bicycle Plan. The project included the identification of a practical local and regional network, reflecting the largely rural nature of the Council and also the potential cycle tourism opportunities associated with the River Murray and the proposed development of a trail along the River Murray.

To understand the Council area and resident views on cycling, the team spent three days travelling through the Council, visiting the main townships and holding engagement workshops with the community in 4 locations. The development of safe cycling access to schools was a particular focus of the projects with many of the schools recording high levels of active travel and keen to support that continuing.

The recommended networks within the townships were largely advisory and signage treatments, reflecting the generally low traffic volumes. The identified networks linked key destinations such as retail areas, community centres, schools, recreational areas, caravan parks and tourist destinations for leisure cycling. Localised crossing issues were also identified in some of the townships. Upgrades to existing tourist based routes and future opportunities for leisure and tourist cycling routes were identified to provide Council with long terms goals to consider.
