parramatta light rail
Parramatta Light Rail is one of the NSW Government’s major infrastructure projects to serve Greater Sydney. Delivered in two phases, Stage 1 will connect
Westmead to Carlingford via Parramatta CBD and Camelia. The two-way track extends 12 kilometres and is expected to be complete in 2023.
Transport for NSW engaged GTA Consultants to provide the Transport Planning inputs in support of the final business case and Environmental Impact Statement. The inputs focused on optimising the route of the Light Rail while minimising impacts on the community. GTA developed detailed traffic models to analyse critical road intersections and assess any points of conflict with the Light Rail Route. This included a detailed review of alternative routes through Parramatta CBD, and addressed traffic circulation and operation both during construction and operation.
The Transport Planning inputs also focussed on integrating the Light Rail with bus and train networks and on developing the pedestrian and cycle networks to ensure a holistic transport solution that promoted accessibility and public safety alongside the new infrastructure.
Integrating a light rail system through the middle of a city environment has incredible challenges and creates both significant impacts and opportunities for the built environment and the community. GTA’s contribution and collaboration with the multidisciplinary team advancing the project will help to ensure great outcomes for the people of Parramatta and the broader metropolitan community across Western Sydney and beyond.
