“The Ribbon” is a new hotel and leisure complex on Sydney’s Darling Harbour. The developer, Grocon, appointed GTA in the project’s initial design phase to provide transport engineering and technical design services as well as advice on the project’s interface with surrounding intersections and transport modes.
Located on a compact site, The Ribbon brings together several activities, all of which have distinct transport considerations. GTA was involved from the initial master-planning phase through to the detailed construction plan and management of issues and site constraints that arise during construction.
The core challenge was managing the diverse transport activity across the site: public transport, private vehicles, tourist coaches and high pedestrian volumes. For the building operators, the priority is providing a seamless arrival for guests and visitors as well as the safe and efficient access of loading vehicles which service the businesses.
GTA led the design and procurement of a 170-space parking facility, operated with an automated car stacker, that sits alongside the basement loading dock. A valet service also was integrated into the design to allow continuity of service for the hotel operator as well as ease of access for guests and visitors.
GTA also oversaw a pedestrian management plan to establish an open and comfortable environment for people to experience and integrate the building with the surrounding landscape.
