Castle Towers Shopping Centre is one of Sydney and Australia’s largest shopping centres, featuring some 113,000sqm of existing retail floor area and 5,300 car spaces.
GTA has worked with QIC since 2012, providing transport planning and engineering advice associated with the Centre’s significant expansion. In September 2016 Council provided Consent approval for an increase in floor area up to 193,000sqm and approximately 8,000 car spaces.
The development application for this proposal was supported by a transport impact assessment prepared by GTA that reviewed internal parking layouts, vehicle circulation/access, loading, pedestrian/cycling and public transport impacts. A detailed traffic model of the Castle Hill precinct was also prepared for consideration by Council and RMS in achieving support for the development.
An amendment to the ‘Ultimate’ approval is now being sought, with the modifications relating primarily to the architecture and built form. GTA’s role is to reassess the impacts of the Amendment and Stage 1 developments and to create transport assessments for each application. An updated traffic model has also been prepared with Aimsun software to reflect minor changes to the Consent-approved road works.
Stage 1 of the Centre’s expansion is scheduled for completion at the end of 2022.
Key project outcomes:
- Authority engagement with Council, RMS and TfNSW
- Updated traffic modelling for the development applications using Aimsun
- Design review completed for the amended proposals including consideration for parking, loading and vehicle access arrangements
- Preparation of Transport Impact Assessment reports to support the Ultimate and Stage 1 development applications.
