Located on a triangular island site in South Perth, Civic Heart is a mixed-use residential development that combines heritage-listed architecture with modern amenities. Comprising two residential towers, Civic Heart contributes to reactivating the local neighbourhood through ground-level hospitality and commercial tenancies as well as exemplary pedestrian amenities for residents and locals.
Finbar initially appointed GTA to review and sign off on the traffic management approach prior to submitting to the City of South Perth, Main Roads and Western Australian Planning Commission. This process sought to mitigate additional pressures on the road network and ensure that any traffic entering or exiting the development would not create more congestion.
As part of the review, GTA worked closely with the City of South Perth to adopt a traffic model created to test prospective developments in the municipality. GTA used the model output to understand the traffic flows around the site and ensure that the surrounding network could accommodate the increased 2,500 daily vehicle trips to the development while aligning with Main Roads’ standards for traffic management.
In addition to the review, GTA was also engaged to provide design input relating to the pedestrian amenity around Mends Street and develop an access management plan that Main Roads can control to improve south-bound vehicle flow along Labouchere Road. Equally, GTA worked closely with the project architect to review the internal carpark layout and loading bay requirements for delivery vehicles to the site.
GTA had previously worked with the City of South Perth and undertook this project with a strong understanding of the context, road network and traffic modelling. Collectively this experience positioned the team to pre-emptively manage transport constraints and suggest appropriate mechanisms to create a seamless experience for all modes travelling to and from the development.
